My iPhone 3G sucks power very fast as well. I hate talking on the phone and I try to avoid talking on the phone at all costs but using the Internet wears it down quickly as well. The screen on the iPhone is fantastic but I have a feeling that has a lot to do with power usage while applications are in use. The worst though is if I travel somewhere where coverage is AT&T coverage is iffy. It can suck through the battery in a couple hours even if it is on standby the entire time. I always take a car charger with me and just leave it plugged in if I think I am going to be out in the country. My old phone sucked donkey balls and weighed like 20 lbs but it had a much longer battery life.

Oops, forgot to say currently I'm getting 3-5 hrs call time, and 3-5 days standby. :( Also worth mentioning some of these kits could easily be adapted for use at schools with commonly available items in NZ from places like Surplustronics, Jaycar or DSE with things like a veroboard instead.
